NEXT ISSUE à HOO NOSE?
Esteemed respected MMS President passes away: this past June 25 Dave Eisner segued from this ‘earthly’ realm to whatever follows. He was the MMS President, known for his humor, loquaciousness, and his ever-present bow-tie. Obviously, the MMS Board meeting (suggestions rather than requirements) standards for meeting attire were a bit more elevated during his tenure. A lawyer, in addition to heading up the MMS (the editor is not sure exactly when – later 1990’s or early 2000’s), he was head of the local Public Defender’s Office. In addition to his work, his marathon P R was sub-3 hours, and he also climbed all Colo. “14-ers” and rode more than just a few gnarly long-distance bicycle events. Borrowing the last line from the movie “Stand by Me” – although I hadn’t seen him for years, he will be missed forever. <Conrad informed us that Eisner’s term as prez was early (?) 90’s>
MMS Directors meeting, JUNE 4: 8 directors were present. We wondered what country(ies) was director Larry in? Lamented on the Liz N recent service. And then … Sheryl lamented that of 5 races scheduled on a recent weekend, only 2 actually occurred. It was suggested MMS make a $100 donation to HopeWest in Liz’s name. The V. Pres lamented that in some recent events there were NO non-alcohol beverages available.
For those of you who wish to participate in our Board-of-Directors gatherings, ask any Director when the next meeting is – (you might be ‘elected’ to the Board – weirder things have happened).
For submissions for next newsletter: Email articles to [email protected]
Doesn’t have to be a ‘submission’ – as the editor should be told of O-missions, etc. Any out-of-area (weird) races/events members have participated in? If not emailing, send via ‘regular’ mail to MMS, c/o Betunada, 230 Sunset Hills, Grand Jct., CO 81503

OCTOBER 5: The West Elk Challenge is a trail marathon during the peak of fall colors. Racers will start on the shores of Crawford Reservoir State Park and travel on gravel roads through the farms and ranches at the base of the iconic Needle Rock. Soon thereafter, the trail enters the Gunnison National Forest and begins climbing the singletrack through golden aspen stands on the slopes of Mt. Lamborn.
After about 5 miles of climbing, runners top the 9,762 foot summit of Inter-Ocean Pass, and descend through spruce, aspen and oak, past Lone Cabin Reservoir to the town of Paonia and end along the North Fork of the Gunnison River. Run, walk, and hike your way through the fall foliage of the West Elk Mountains! This challenge is a fundraiser for the Nature Connection’s Scholarship Fund. All proceeds will help the Nature Connection offer kids and family school-based and summer programming in Delta County.

Abbreviated and belated summary of DESERT RATS Races – held last April in the Mack/Hawkeye Trailhead/Mary’s Loop area: The Desert Rats races are but one of a series put on by UTMB all over the world – 47 events. What amazes the editor is the number of competitors who ran the D.R. races: 153 finished the 100k, 419 (!) completed the 50k, 561 (?!) ran the half-marathon (21k), and quite a few ran the “shortie” (10k) race. We would have looked for “local” (Grand Valley & environs) results – but each finisher is associated by what country they’re from. Never-the-less, some (or more than “some”) somewhat familiar names were among the front runners, so …
100k: won by Rajpaul Pannu (age-group 20-34), 9:19:35. Julien Chorier (40+ a.g.) from FRANCE was 3rd, 9:45:10. 10th place was first woman, Elena Ormon (35-39), 11:32:02 and, “Anonymous” from Australia was 19th.
50k: first was Justin Grunewald (35-39), 3:40:55. In 8th was first lady, Helen Mino-Faukner (20-34), 4:14:42. And we noticed 3 somewhat-familiar (?) in the top ten: Ryan Gil, Max Robinson, and Whit Blair. 18th finisher was Donnie Tietsema, well under 5 hours of fun.
21k: Imagine the starting line with 561 or more of your best friends. Eli Hemming (20-34 age) had a fa-a-a-st trail 1/2M with 1:22:44. In the top ten were Jesh Small and Josh Eberly – local runners? And 15th was first woman, Jaycie Thomson (20-34), 1:38:47.
Sunday, June 30, Turkey Flats Run, 9.6 miles Pinon Mesa (above Glade Park)
In a repeat of their recent Garfield Grumble 1-2 performances, Brian Glassey and Zenon Reece were the first two to cross the line at the Turkey Flats Run. Brian turned in one of the better winning times for this course despite less than ideal wet conditions. Conditions didn't impede Michelle Oberndorf either as she posted the second fastest time ever for a woman. Maybe it was the cooler temps and the abundance of giant columbines that inspired the fast times.
It was great to have a contingent of budding young athletes from Caprock Academy and Colorado Mesa University getting a taste of our local premier running trails. Thanks coach Joe Sheader for your work with this gang! It's also inspiring to see a good sized contingent of plus-two-hour runners out there, unintimidated and savoring the experience. Congratulations on your excellent efforts,
everyone! Plus a big shout out goes to Steve Defeyter, our stalwart course sweeper and flag picker upper!

Strider Spotlight:
As Striders and as runners, we’re all a bit quirky in our different ways. Some of us are more outgoing and will chat the ear off of anyone willing to run near us, and others of us change up our pace in group runs just so we can run in solitude. For those of us who are a little less chatty but would still like to get to know other Striders members, we’ve created the Strider Spotlight. I will randomly corner a member at Striders events to ask them questions related to running. Semi-kidding about the cornering - participation is entirely optional! The interview questions originally included “What’s your most embarrassing running story?” but I decided we don’t need to publish those stories in print and instead I can keep them for potential blackmail. Feel free to let me know if you’d like to volunteer to be highlighted in a future Strider Spotlight!
